Looks like an exponential waste of time to me, does it have any redeeming quality at higher levels?

i originally totally ignored it. But now im thinking there is at least one thing worthwhile -- Transformation artifact. You can n craft this item. Previously you could only buy it with xim. This item lets you replace a property on your armour/items with another property of the same level. (eg: replace +15 bludgeon damage with +15 slash damage or something like that). It's pretty significant.
