The love that parents give to their offspring is different from the one that a couple has. It's not the same kind of relationship, so the behaviour is different, but it's love in the end. We, humans, are living beings that think. The "cogito ergo sum" concept implies that thinking is an undeniable truth, but our thinking is "controlled" by feelings like love and such (it really gives us advice, feelings can never fully control us). So, in order to be "complete humans" and not just "logical machines" we need our feelings. Experiment all of them at least once if you can. This doesn't mean you're tamable or vulnerable because you can still control yourself. Love is, in my humble opinions, one of the three most important "drives" of human behaviour. It makes wonderful things to people, though it sometimes hurts A LOT. We're alive because of it, we were raised in warm* homes because of the love our parents had between them and us. Sometimes love can make you open your eyes too. If you're like me, someone whose pride and ego are far away from reality, love can strike you down and see reality through someone else's point of view. *: Warm in the emotional sense. As in "warm feelings".

However... If you follow this line of thinking to its logical end you must ask yourself: "How do parents who adopt fit in with this whole Darwin concept I have, which explains the meaning of why love exists - the propagation of the species?" For I contend that those parents who adopt have no stake in the child, to raise it if you will, for they share no genetic material with the child they adopted... Thus, adoption is counter to the idea that "love" exists because it's the mechanism which is used to cause genetic material is spread and once this genetic material takes the form of a child "love" causes the couple to stick together and raise the child... Nonsense I say! Quote:
For example, look to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs... (It must be noted that when reading Maslow's work he will mention "love", however, remember that "love" is a word with many meanings and in order to truly understand his concepts of needs - you must also account that one meaning of love is need)... The truth is humans don't need love - they just need specific needs meet to be well adjusted... Thus, "love" in the classical definition can be replaced with "belonging" which in the end is the root of the emotional states we attribute to the word "love" ... However, to your credit I did like this statement: Quote:
