I should point out, this was on fixed pipeline . My crappy lappy on board graphics is able to handle maximum shader 2.0 on Windows, however, as of yet, nothing above fixed pipeline on linux.

Yes, I think it's better that the client is partly or 100% OS (OpenSource). I have great performance problems, compile the client on my own will make it run better. I think NG3D (the 3D engine) only should be OS under a very strict license which only allows to use the code at regnum client. The rest (e.g. network code) can be precompiled (in binary format) and linked together while compiling the client. There are 2 development models (from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat...d_the_Bazaar):
PS: The windows client is compiled with MS Visual C++ 6.0 (OMG this version is released 1998) .

I dont think opensourcing the client would help much because there are only so much things that client does... the most interesting stuff is happening on server anyway and I dont think NGD would opensource it.
