I guess there must be some issues with the animation overheads on them. As to say I'm sure if we did get capes we wouldn't want them to look like boards attached to our characters backs, as that would look dumb, and I suppose for something to flutter in the wind you're gonna be talking about a reasonable extra load of polygons...
Once you have fifty or so cloaks to animate in the middle of a battle, people will start moaning about performance... All that said, it would be *totally* pretty and fun if we could have them.

Actually, if i remember correctly, that was exactly the way capes (or some similarly named piece of equipment) were in a few dnd games, like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and i think NWN. You would loot it, equip it, get the bonuses, but no graphic change in your character. So, NGD, don't be embarassed to just do that and let the graphics for later on

Haven't you seen the Incredibles!? :P
Capes are bad, they get stuck and will be your end! You can't get arrows from your quiver, the cape is in the way!

Haven't you see Lord of the Rings, the fellowship of the ring, yesterday, bro?
You can get an arrow out of your quiver with a cape on. Capes would be nice. Beautiful decorated capes with realm emblems weared by mages and warriors, hunters with big capes made of fur to keep them warm and camouflage them in the background. Yes, images by the capes would be nice .

Being more aesthetic, than competitive, I'd only really like to see them implemented if they could be a visual part of the engine, that didn't add huge costs in performance. Otherwise I'm not that fussed. I look forward to more things in this game that allows us to make our characters unique and distinctive.
