Yeah if this is a recurring problem, freezing the comp, it sounds very much like it's either hardware related or possibly driver related (but the first option seems more likely, possibly it's overheating?)
If you have another computer available, use that to ssh in to your gaming computer and keep one of the log files active (tail -f), that way you'll see when it happens again if the system gave a message or reason why.

Think it's very probable that it is hardware My computer completely crashed not too long ago, and i couldn't get into windows or even format my hard drive... (Currently running it from an external drive ) oh, well.... guess i'll just give up then...

Probably not a related issue, but you can try to turn off "Terrain Detail" under Options -> Advanced options..
