We had banks. I never was rich in that era, but I was middle class. It would be foolish to carry gold in a game where you can be fully looted (and fully loot others).
(Gold had a real value in UO at the time).

Oh man... It was the best non-scripted game I ever played. Of course it's not the same memories as those of a scripted game like FF6 or Chrono Trigger, but those are a bit like an interactive book... Ultima Online offered complete freedom, light years from what all MMOs offer right now, from WoW to Regnum. The music was awesome, the players were awesome, the diversity, the enormous world, everything was so better than what we have now. Considering it was the first true MMORPG, and that it defined the genre, it's a shame no one managed to do as good since. Probably because there were a lot of gameplay and technical difficulties that came along with that freedom... and because such a freedom makes the game very hard and people want easy stuff. God how I miss it.

I used to play urrh... A text based war game where you have to build up islands etc and take over more, regnum is kind of a big step up for me, haha.
