A good way to find out if someone is a witch:

bind someone's hands and feet together and throw him in a river. If (s)he sinks to the ground (s)he cannot be blamed to be a witch. But (s)he is dead anyway then.

That's because water seemed to be holy and does not accept something unholy like witches in it.
