Alsius attracts older people, Ignis attracts emos, Syrtis attracts whoever is left over.

Yes, it's probably because of the kind of people that are attracted.
Me for instance, I'm a total lone wolf, I have no clan, and I usually try to get far from other players, but I'm also a good cristian person who likes doing good things, and who enjoys the nature. I was going to select Syrtis, because there were forests, and it seemed to be the good realm, while Alsius seemed cold and unfriendly, and Ignis being bad and dark; but I selected Ignis, otherwise I would have been my friend enemy. And well, lots of ignites are totally the oposite from me.
Later I created an account on Syrtis, and the people there seemed to be as lonely as me. Maybe shy lonely people like forests and light elves, while social and more "common" people prefer the "darkness" of Ignis, but I can't tell anything about Alsius 'cuz I haven't been there (and I don't think I will)

If there are more girls in syrtis, it's probably because they prefer cute than woods than a dead dessert. I wonder which realm would hace selected my friends if they "had a choice."
