It does work on higher lvl mobs, Elder Gryphos are lvl 51. It just doesn't work on large mobs like trolls, since those have range, or fast attacking mobs since apparently they also have range. Snakes are harder to kite but definitely possible.

not fast + long range
It doesnt work on fast mobs. It doesnt work on long range mobs.
