i dont know why they seem to run faster but for my own amusement sometimes i stay dead to watch the lil buggers run round in forts and castles it always makes me laugh ,kinda like watchin a Dachshund, dog try to play fetch

This is your mistake and i'll go explaining you why:
1) playing the dully elf side, you did not notice that your
player really dont run in a straight line seeking enemies, your char instead
ALWAY run heading his nearest "spot of love" (trees) dwarves instead run
normally... so you are slower by race,

2) Half elf have half brain... so you are slowed by thoughts that may seem
strange on your head like "doooh!", "hooow a wonderful tree!", "wow , a real
bush of maroon

We paint stripes on the side of our dwarves so that they go faster
