believe me... when i come out with a comment like this, its not like we don't respect you... sometimes we feel like you don't respect us.
We are working today (which was going to be a holiday because we have been eating holidays) to be able to make this big release work. And there are people who apparently know more about game development than us, criticizing our way of working. We thought that we have all the major issues cleared out. In less than 24 hours we have fixed the most critical ones. WE also swapped servers around to have a little more power for the resource loading server. And we had to make this release yesterday because are about to start working with a new partner and it HAD to be released before easter. There are not many dev teams in the world that are more open than us. we just sometimes don't have the time to communicate things properly. We are 16 people now at NGD (now all working on Regnum), and still the community guy has to work on the programming of the website. We are still small but growing. I feel proud and honored that you guys play our game, i just hope you understand how far along we came (with your help of course) and how much we still need your help, support and comprehension to make Regnum as great as we all want it to be. Best regards, - Chilko PS: Niclam has made a formal statement about the status of this update also. Last edited by niclam; 04-08-2009 at 09:39 PM. |

We understand you're a small team and everything, but you have to realize human nature is that, with more features and more things happening in the world of RO, people are going to start expecting more out of NGD. I don't know what it will take to start getting bugs squished before an update, or if having more testers on Amun would help, but I'd certainly be willing to start pitching in on Amun to see what breaks, and report it.
The more polished and more feature-rich that RO becomes, people are going to start expecting things to work properly. Temper that with the caveat, that more features usually means more complexity in the code, and greater potential for mistakes, errors, logic problems minor and major, and potential for leaving legacy code behind may or may not create unexpected problems. So naturally, as you advance with RO, its features, content, additions, balance, etc. etc. etc. it -should- take longer to test everything properly. An extra month or so in testing isn't going to kill anyone. In this game, you have to shoot for quality, not quantity. And this is always something that bugged me, but the concept of "hotfixes" I always tagged to the way Microsoft does things....do you -really- want to go down the same road as those guys? (edit: that was my sad attempt at humor) |

They work to a deadline, I suspect a extra month testing will hurt a few people :P
I would however like to see a dedicated "bug fix" update at some point, no new content or anything, just bugs, so NGD can focus on just getting most of those delt with. Remember gamers are mostly evil spoiled kids and they will pick on even little things to turn them off the game, its no use haveing all this amazing stuff later on if a player logs in and spots a bug or something in the first hour, mobs flying up walls etc all looks very un-pro if your looking for a game to spend a few months and even maybe a few $ playing. Yes I know Initiation zones are being delt with and I know doing als first was for a reason. But its also the realm that it will benefit you least for (player number wise) since a large chunk play Ignis or Syrtis over Alsius, so they never see the shiny start zone. Quote:
And I know a certain company that only has 4 full time workers (-1 because tony is useless) (+3 if me Tyler and Ant go in) They may not run a MMO but they make a good job of Multimedia creations :P

This is not like cooking, something that most people can do. This is software... this is games... and one of its most complex genres/gametypes. We are in Argentina, not in the US where there is a consolidated industry... its not like i can post an ad looking for a PHD on Computer science with 5+ years of experience working on MMO game servers. We have to learn all the hard way. When we started we where completely blind... now we are just grasping what we can do (and i think that invasions is an update that can show the kind of progress that we have had). Anyway, I hope you can still enjoy scrambled eggs, until we can serve you good pasta... you should be asking for a steak as we are Argentinean but I do make "eatable" Sushi too. best regards, - Chilko |

Chilko, i think thats my only chance to get a answer about this, so, even if it is totally unrelated i will post it...
When all work in the iniciation zones is done.. you will continue adding win to the inner realm and them to the warzone? Now its feels totally uninteresting..

also, we have recently found out that certain performance issues in cities and towns have to do with the way we modeled and textured our houses... so if we have to re-model texture those you can imagine that we will try to get them to this level of quality. when i say not in the same way is that this was too radical, all new quests... all new areas... there might be other areas of the game that just need a complete overhaul, other areas that might just need more content or just a touch up in graphics... As always we will try to prioritize what is better for the game... right now we went for a better initial impact after that we have other goals in mind |

Well, yeah, I guess an extra month of testing would kinda kill the whole working against the deadline thing, which would not be a good thing. But still, there's gotta be something that can be done to ease in the updates, even if it just means getting more testers onto Amun, to help the bughunts. Anyway, I'm not meaning to bash or mash too much. NGD does a great job overall, and there's been a ton of progress this year alone. And the bugs in this update weren't like...earth-shattering. Just maybe more visible or apparent. But anyway, keep up the good work!
Also, steak is overrated. I'll take a chicken-related asian dish though My preference is for Katsu or General Tso's. Now I'm hungry. Work can't end soon enough. |
