I dont hate Windows or another Operating systems ...there is no point to argue what OS is beter because this discusion will be infinite of argues. Better OS is that one what you like more and you know to use. Anyway this competition from OS-s are good because come with progress of tehnologys. Anyway at this kind of troble i found more solutions: ================== In Linux i use: -2 partions usual "/" and "/home"=>if i need to instal system /home partion will keep all my data. -second i have 2 Hard Drives in RAID -miror(second hard-disk back-up my dat; -3-th i have 3-th party server what back-up only my important data online. Code:
sample way and not need programing ecknolage. just i put one bash script in cronetab what run once /hour and download all my data from my pc to server and have one sample line...any linux user know this: #!/bin/bash wget http : "ip" /d:\ /home/back_up In windows: -raid with miror hards -server way too. ============= In MacOSX: -I use RAID; -Time capsul with 3-th hard disk; -server way too. Like this i keep all my data on more places and never lose forever all this thinks... Next time find ways too never lose your data... Not one OS is perfect..belive me...at one moment can lose dat from any of them. PS:Anyway there are lots of "PRO" Softwere to back-up and recover data. But troble is PC will work slower with this thinks...so i never use them...i like more sample ways and build-in of OS option...and there are lots of this too. |

Bah. Everyone knows that the only good operating system is AmigaOS.

External usb drives are cheap, and linux is quite easy to install. If you have any problem just boot up linux, mount the windows partition and salvage what you can. And you can still play Regnum!

Always have a ghost prepared. I do backups once a month in case my pc fries.
Anyway, stop forcing Matt to go Linux. Going Linux of course have some advantages of controlling your system, but you'll need months of learning how the hell does this thing work, even installing drivers is a pain in the ass or running a program. I wouldn't ever switch to Linux beacuse it requires an excessive amount of knowledge and focus, and I do not have time to gather it all just to use a "stable" system. What I agree with is Torg's idea about running your HDD as a slave and checking out what went wrong, getting back all of your stuff, saved games, pr0n, whatever you wish. And yes, you'd have to push a little horizontal switch there, the additional HDD can lay on a pile of books with your pc open, if you have no room inside. I did that when I was upgrading from 13GB to 120GB ;p

When you don't have Windows pre-installed, you also have to install all the drivers yourself And installing drivers on Windows is in my opinion more annoying and difficult than on Linux. So if Matt ever thought of switching to Linux, now is the time.

Last time I checked the only driver I had to manually* install was the nVidia Graphics Adapter one, as most modules are already built-in or bootstrapped at startup by udev. Of course, a user never knows that because it's automagical (that is the technical term).
*manually = "Your hardware requires extra drivers. Click here to install". Done. We're not forcing him to linux, it's just that's easy enough and doesn't require him to install it (though installing it is better since if he's like me he will lose the CDs ). If you like the ghost way (that's basically what the "recovery partition" is), do it, but it's technically more daunting than simply running a CD. :P

In newer Windows version this is no longer a problem.. but in windows...
Buy premade computer -> get no driver cds. Need to install drivers -> need internet Get internet -> need network driver. I had to connect to internet to get the drivers needed to connect to internet to get the drivers needed to connect to internet to get the drivers needed to connect to internet to get the drivers needed to...[...]. I never installed a driver in linux other than the nvidia one, and its automatic anyway. And i installed from stuff like the gentoo and the archlinux minimal cds....

But it's just me, I like to be safe ;p Any user that has Linux installed, no matter what the version, has to learn a bit of programming. That's magic for me, I have a totally absent mind, I can barely add 2+2, and I suppose from how I know Matt, that he's an artist too, and it would be hard for him to get the language in a usable way. And I do realise it's easier, faster etc etc but I noticed every Linux user is making others use it too. Like a crusade or something, not always aggressive, but they ALWAYS try to convince others. I never met anyone who wouldn't ;p kinda like with religion ;p me myself, hate that approach. I was interested in Linux when I was oh so tired of win98. Then I met people using Linux, everywhere they were the same, very very very transgressing. I hope Matt managed to get everything running again and maybe perhaps he's found the reason of this.
