so data here

Maybe this is the surprise NGD talked about? We'll have all sorts of "close call" quests and quests to locate bits of galactic debris. Good times.

Or it could come as a gamma ray burst, ionize our ozone layer, and destroy all life on earth. But even if that did happen, who really knows when?

I do love how the media keeps portraying stuff happening in the stars as being "right now breaking" news. Anything that we observe of Betelgeuse happened at least 500 years ago....

you really didn't even check it out, did you? ;P it's too far to even affect us with radiation

at least 500? I'd say millions! TRILLIONS! :P

its about 640 light years away so it wont even cause us any problems at all

Now now, I did check it out, and Betelgeuse is estimated somewhere around 640 light years from us. It would take us a ridiculous amount of time to travel there, true, but observable events not so long to arrive (As almost all of them travel within a few AUs per hour of c).

Now if it were to collapse in a relaxed and conservative manner (ie a boring supernova) it would just be a pretty light show from here, but a gamma ray burst is about as violent an "ending" as you can get. Remember how pulsars are detected by bursts of X-Rays as a neutrino (ie. already collapsed star) sheds mass? A GRB is like that, only from a collapsing star (ie. much more energy), and more or less instantaneous rather than continuous.
http://science.nasa.gov/science-news...003/10apr_grb/ describes the observation of the closest GRB recorded thus far, it brushed our ionosphere and caused radio VLF blackout / LF interference from 2 billion light years away, or several orders of magnitude further than Betelgeuse. If we were directly in its path....

But it's a big sky, moreso if you're trying to find Earth (or even Sol) from Betelgeuse then the other way around. Also, given the magnitude and mass of Betelgeuse, a neat and tidy explosion is far more likely than a messy extremely brightly shining lance of boom.

EDIT: Apologies, I read some reports wrong Don't know where I got VLF blackout from. Look at http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn3/2176.gcn3 for report of measured effects of GRB030329 on LF radio transmission and http://vlf.stanford.edu/research/gam...cts-ionosphere for pretty graphs related to a lower magnitude event.

So.... I expect to get some much better shots than I got of McNaught when it was nearby.

I wonder where my tripod got to....
