Not detracting from Kings ability as a writer mind you, but I think the only
films derived from one of his books that lived up to its potential was
"Shawshank Redemtion" and perhaps "The Shining" .
Before anyone flames me... I emphasize its not Kings shortcomings as a writer
but the abilities of the film makers that make the movies so mundane.
"The Stand" would have been an outstanding movie (series of movies) had it
been done right.

Films dont often live up to any book they are based on, if you like books that is. Simply because film is a differant type of media, you cant fit as many plot elements and storylines into 1 film as you could 1 book, and when you are just given a Image on screen and told 'it looks like this' it probably dosnt look as 'cool' as you pictured it in your mind.

true true, even multi episode films (LOTR) lose something in the traslation to
visual media, thats why I often pass on movies I've already read the book of.
Now that you guys got me thinking (this cant end well), I'm wondering about
films coming out recently that have origins in alternate sources; games and
comics for instance... are they better or worse because they have less
to preconcieve judgement on ? {examples: Resident Evil, Doom/ Batman, Spiderman} How would Regnum stack up as a movie ?

But rarely if ever does Hollywood succeed in making a great book into a movie they usually make a great book into an ok movie imo
Although 1 comes to mind i enjoyed both was Robin Cook's Coma

On the 'Super Hero' media I cant say I read many comics but I did enjoy as just one example; Spiderman 2, best plot of the 3, fights that played to spidys agility (like the train part) improvements on the patchy CG in the first film, and a Mary-Jane whos only role is not just scream and get kidnapped every 5 mins make it the best of the 3 films imo.

Batman Begins/Dark Knight I also loved and look forward to seeing the next one, I think Comics -> Film is easier than Book -> Film because the film makers rarely bind the plot of their film to the comic to much, they use the characters and the universe from the comics but are not as tied down as in a book. People going to see Harry Potter for example expect it to follow the books plot, but someone going to see Iron Man will only expect the universe, not a copy of one of the comics.

Games have less success I think, a subtle nudge at the Street Fighter films is a good example of this, some are kind of alright, the Laura Croft films for example but I cant think of a really 'good' Game -> Film adaptation, much the same for Film -> Game where there are very few worth playing. I do however look forward to seeing what happens with the possible MGS film and the inevtable Halo film, with M$softs big money behind it there is a chance of it being good, but odds on it will be a big-effects no-brains sort of affair.

What about Resident Evil(really like these films) or Doom...Silent Hill was a bit shit - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...on_video_games

Lols there was a Sonic the Hedgehog film that went straight to video

I'd have to say that i prefer films that are derived from comics i did really like Spider man, (the newer, darker) Batman - The Dark Knight, Iron Man(), Hell Boy and lastly my favourite of them all V for Vendetta, again there's a list on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Superhero_films

In conclusion i think the comic book---->film, works better than book---->film..why..i think because a comic book requires less imagination to read them, therefore it translates better into film, less details to cover - plotline more simple. Whereas books...for example Harry Potter films disappointed me so much because they will never be to fit in all the details that J K Rowling puts into her books - im preparing myself for disappointment for Deathly Hallows which i'll get dragged to see by the kids :s
