Whoa Luthy, nice photo!

How do you make that strange blur effect? It doesn't really look like the normal blur filter fx.

Yes, it is a way much nicer. It is an effect in gimp. It is called "warm glowing".
I did the picture black/white and then I used this effect. You can adjust the glow effect easily. Sharpness, light, glow.

I am still in love with this program, gimp is great.

YAY!!! Nice, I'm going to test that effect now, it's new to me (I'm used to mix filters to get "new" effects)... I got some photos on my vacations that I could use.
