It's interesting to note that society has twisted the sense of the word to signify such abhorrent behavior. And more disturbing than that is realizing the change from friend to rapist should have had some sort of cultural or ethical connection in the past. It implies that raping was a normal and accepted in friendship.

well in ancient greece it was 'normal' to have both male and female lovers, for instance the macedonian king philip of macedon (father of alexander the great) was killed by a jealous lover, but stating that friends raped eachother is a bit exaggerating, yes it occured friends having intercourse, because it was seen as something good, because of the bond making.

But indeed the meaning of the therm friend did a bit change in the past but what i think is kinda disturbing is that 'philos' is also used for not harmefull and social accepted sexualities or even people loving ppl. like heterophilia (hetero: different), homophilia (homo: same) also called androphilia andropos: man.

actually the name 'philip' is derived from the greek philos hypos= friend of the horses, this don't mean the guy raped horses but just loved them (this was a common name in macedon cause in hellas there where hardly any horse breeders)
