Just install Driconf, run it, then go to the second tab and enable the S3TC texture compression.

Last time when i tried the trick with driconf only main screen was good but lemme try now

ok so currently game runs but nothing more, game menu is messed up. any ideas?

Well, now you will have to install the libxtc library.

I don't use Ubuntu, and I don't know if the package restricted-sources or however it is called includes libxtc. Try looking it up in the repos.
