Crash on start up !

I'm wanting to try the new models but after a long download of the updates all I get is a crash after creating a new character .

I'm not sure what the problem is. my current set up is

Software:
Ubuntu 9.10 x86
ATI cat 10.02
Gnome (tried with fluxbox as well)

Hardware:
AMD 780G Chipset
AMD PhenomII x3 720 overclocked 3.1Ghz
MSI ATI Radeon 4670 512 ddr3
4GB OCZ Ram
On-board sound

I have never had a problem playing in fact I just got done benchmarking with Unigine Heaven at stock setting in window 1024x768 I was able to run 29fps avg.

I hope this gets fixed soon.

PS.: I have tried many times with different settings. with no luck
