game crash: Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":0.0"

I have the latest ubuntu edgy 386.

Nvidia FX5200 9629 connected to a crt.

Currently what happens is that when I boot up normally, I try to run Regnum Online I get this error:

Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":0.0".
Saving backtrace to crash_backtrace_8534.log
Got SIGSEGV (segmentation fault)

However, if i boot into recovery mode then start X it all works great.

I'm at a loss for words. Ideas?

Also I installed as myself but it only works when logged in as root.

can you post your xfree86.conf or xorg.conf?
