I get the impression it may be a graphics/font problem? I have an nVidia 6200 with the latest driver on Ubuntu 7.10.

I'm lost here. Every ubuntu release has new problems with the launcher And it's compiled on a debian etch stable distro... it *should* work.

I'd need to install ubuntu to try to reproduce this, but it doesn't seem to happen to every ubuntu user, or does it?

I don't know HOW to reproduce it but in Gutsy I had it too. One of the many reasons to get back to Feisty Fawn Studio. For most persons the following helped:

MALLOC_CHECK_=0 ./rolauncher

Starting Regnum like this should help with the glib thing. Seems to be an error with memory allocation.
What is your driver version? I use 100.14.19
I had hughe problems with 169.07. It made my Xserver freeze every 3 seconds. I went back to the older one.

I think that the problem is coming from the library , someone reported the same problem with gentoo, it has something to do with the libraries, debian uses "stable" versions, these versions are often old.

debian stable uses glibc 2.3.6
ubuntu (and most other popular distros) uses glibc 2.6

Same error with MALLOC_CHECK=0.

I tried on 169.04 and 169.07 drivers. Any drivers prior to that cause system problems for me.

I don't know if this will have any real meaning, but just to give you an example... The Wine project has a different install package for each version of Ubuntu. That leads me to believe that each version of Ubuntu may have fundamental changes which must be considered when dealing with pre-compiled binaries.

That's not entirely true (though it seems it will become the bitter reallity in no time), there's a great number of users who still use Debian as their primary distro (like me). You could enable the Syd repos. to download the testing libs for compiling...

I prefer to stick to the "old and tested" rather than the "new and possibly buggy" software.
