The main basic weapons costs 1 gp for emergencies of this kind.

i have a similar issue. made a my first char a dark elf mage. talked to the 3 starter npc's and equipped my "initiation staff" cast curse and my staff broke. is this type of thing supposed to happen before you can even get into town?

If you had just started the character, just delete and re-roll . . or ask in chat . . . someone will give you some gold . . If you are level 1 or 2 , I would just re-roll ..otherwise ask for some help . .
