Important: I have at the bottom of this post released the source code for the current maps, as well as a jpg and a png version of my full, unmarked map, xcf and psd versions of the full, unmarked map, and the stylesheet which is used for /stuff/regnum, including the maps. You are free to make use of these for whatever you like, I would however, like to be given a link to whatever you do so I can advertise it here :)

2008-05-30: Obviously I'm not working on the python version of these right now. In fact, obviously I'm not playing right now. I'm actually at uni and don't have time :) I hope to be back sometime in july for a week or two, and maybe (maybe) work on the maps then. In the meantime, I'm releasing the rest of the sources for the php maps.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use screenshots of the ingame world map like this, so uh, please tell me if I'm not and I'll take it down :)

I labeled the map with some of the most important things.. Forts, castles and bridges. (I'm not sure what you nickname them all in other realms, so it may or may not be useless to non-syrtians)

EDIT: I've created a new version of the map using css for the labels, it uses transparent pngs so will not work well in IE6 or below (in fact I had to disable the overlay image just to get it to show the map).
There are a few nice features on it, like disabling various types of labels, disabling the inner realm overlay and disabling the extra info that's shown when you hover some labels. Now I just have to go out and collect said info :D

Mnf. I'd need to get javascripty to put TOO much info there (realm specific nicks etc), otherwise it'll get way too crowded.. but if people actually care I might add some extra labels. (Where the heck is "hl"?)

Edit: Okay, I've updated it with labels for interesting spots that I currently know of that I currently know the name of -

Pozo, Jabeline/stonehenge, cupula, gypsy camp, the graveyard in alsius and the sabre pit. Surprisingly I don't know the name of ANYTHING in ignis apart from forts... I hunt there more often, but I tend to spend the whole hunt trying to keep up with Valorius, not learning the names of the places XD

Only thing I can see missing is Ignis teleporter, its just to the right of their northernmost market :)

It could be nice if where they come out is labelled too? :)

Thanks, I wasn't quite sure where the Ignis one was and I didn't want to mark it 100m off. I hope I've got it about right. All the files have been updated with a marker for the ignis teleporter and a quick (reddot) = Teleport Pad in the bottom right corner.

I'm not entirely sure where they come out, lol. I guess I'll have to go out and test it? XD

I started working on something so similar, it's almost spooky... even down to darkening the map outside the wz (besides the obvious labels/nicknames/etc) :)

We don't have a name for that in syrtis, do you call yours "cupula" too? I'm only labelling things that have nicknames, so that people have a clue what intelligence they're getting.

Seeing as the teleport endpoints are much requested, I'll finish my dinner and go out and test them all today (as well as checking I have the location right on the ignis one)

I'll have my bow off, so I'm going to ask very nicely if people could not kill me too many times ;)

I've updated the files with the rough exit locations for the teleporters marked in blue. Why are they rough? Because I went to each realm and took a screenshot of first the teleporter itself, then the exit point. I then helped retake stone from the evil Alsian empire, fired up gimp and discovered the screenshots were corrupted and the important bits were missing :| So I marked it from memory.

I'm thinking of redoing this map with css and :hover effects for the labels, it would give me the ability to put more information (a lot more) on while looking a lot less crowded.

What do we think?

It's a form of "pozo".. I'm not sure what the -ito suffix means though.. I'm currently thinking "little", so... Little hole?


I'm working on a more complex version of the map right now, eventually it should include extra info such as small screenshots of forts :)

I'm also interested in info on non-marked npcs in other realms (no market symbol, like jabeline in syrtis), and what they sell, the more detail the better.

You don't have to ^^ It's an open request, but ideally a screenshot of their worldmap location (stand ontop of them) and then their name and a description below them... That way I can position their dot exactly.

I'd still love any fort screenshots you have.

And any named landmarks in ignis and alsius! Apart from pozo and the graveyard I'm sorely lacking in them..

I'm about to take a shower then I'll start tweaking the backend (if you can call it that) of the wz map and making an inner syrtis copy.

Those are awesome thanks :) Cropped, sized and up, Shanaarid (eferias is the syrtis castle ;) ) is HUGE in that shot!! I had to cut a bit of the end off to get it to fit, I'm sorry :( I gave it a special 170px image to keep it looking good ^_^

Hmm, now I'm second guessing myself... I think I'm going to have to pay a trip to the syrtis castle to make double double sure it's eferias >_<

I can look into lifting the save graphic off of the warzone ones then going through and adding it to the inner realm ones. That way it won't crowd the maps with more text. I'll try and do that to alsius as I map it.

Wow, you're quite right, fixing now.

Okay, I've got the map lined up again, the full unmarked copy, the psd and xcfs and the unmarked wz copy are all updated.. There was nothing wrong with the unmarked inner realms (although on the full copies they will be slightly different because of general rearranging), so I haven't updated them.

I need to redo the overlay image on the warzone one and tweak the positions of a few labels, but it's only about 10px and I can't be bothered right now ^_^

Hmm, you lack a scrollwheel? You should be able to just scroll down :P I can pad the screen by 200px, that way MOST pics should fit within the existing.. scrolling-space.. if they overflow.

Edit: Given you 70px of wiggle room at the bottom of each map :)

I've got all the screenshots I NEED of ignis, (and alsius too), but if you want to upload yours for me, I'll add any that I like. Please mention what it's a shot of though ;) I didn't spend enough time there to recognise places.

I tweaked the positions of the warzone map to match up (on my screen) with the slightly modified map. I'll probably redo the overlay when I get home (killing time at mum's work right now)

Maybe when I hit 41 I'll work on a city map? ^^

Images may be broken for a few hours while I work on restructuring and automating

Images should be back now.

I've changed the code a little bit to do two things. First automate adding all the images to the end of labels. Second, it now randomly selects an image if there are multiple matching a pattern, so if I have or have been given two screenshots of a place, you'll get one of them at random :)

Which means, I'm always happy to get new screenshots, even if I already have one. Some of them probably won't be usable, but I'd still love to see them :)

If you do want me to use one, please submit it here. Why? Because I'm too lazy to credit you on the maps themselves, if you submit them here then it will be clear who has contributed :P

It looks very nice, but the Options Menu on the top left corner don't work right with the Opera Browser. Would be really nice to see same images with german names too ;).

Basically it goes through all the labels and looks for multiple pictures associated with them, and picks one of them at random.

So all your pictures are there. So are any that I've taken, and any that other people have taken. Refresh and you might get another one :)

Writing the backend for this has been really interesting to me, to go from a single image to a semi automated backend, automate it a little further, extend my php skills and refine my coding style.

In fact, it's been so interesting that I'm now doing two things :

1) Moving it to a database backend. This opens up the possibility for using the same information for other things -- Info pages on forts and cities, possibly an npc database.
2) Rewriting it in python. I love python.

No, I can't just upload pretty pictures and smile, I like to tinker with the insides :D

Once I've got it semi-working, I'll put up a link to a beta of some sort (clever people can find it online already)

I'd like to hear feedback on uh.. Well, there isn't really much information. But I'd like to hear feedback on the fact that I'm doing this :)

well, i could help you with the python part, i love python too :p i could also help you with the database, ive worked mostly with mysql, there's no reason to believe you'd use something else :p

but uh, exactly what are you planning to do in python? i mean, php+mysql is pretty much all you'd need (well, and apache :p)

I don't really need help with any of it XD I already know enough about mysql to have written my own half complete cms.. And uh, mostly complete blog system currently live on kiirani.com :p

As for python.. I have the syntax sorta down, it's just a case of looking things up if I get lost. I'll bug you on irc if google isn't being nice though :D

Hmm. Why python?
The current non-database system is written in php, as is kiirani.com. Since learning python, writing an irc bot etc, my coding style has changed a lot. I process data, build a content variable, then output the content at the end of the page.

This is essentially how mod_python's publisher works.

Writing both systems in php was annoying for me. I miss the little things, list comprehensions, "if x in y:" rather than "if(in_array(x,y)) { "

Basically, I like python, and I was told once "if it's on your server, you can code it in whatever you like"

And so, I am :P

(oh yeah. All of this stuff is being hosted on my home pc, did I mention that?)

This is possible, there are a few reasons why I didn't add it -

Tactics so far as I've seen don't deal with areas. If they did we'd be hunting at "thorkul's rage" not "pozo"
There are a huge number of inconsequential areas, there's not really anything else to put on an inner realm map, but in the warzone you want a clear view of where key areas are, not a bunch of text on minor zone changes
It's too bloody dangerous for me to run around stopping and tweaking in the middle of the warzone XD

That said, if there's somewhere of particular tactical interest that has been given a widely used name by any realm, take a screenshot of your map open while you stand right ontop of it and post it along with the details, I'll probably add it :)

Name, Occupation, Zone Location, X Coord, Z Coord and Realm.

I'm currently adding some missing NPCs, and it's in spanish, so... wait for me to transalte and complete it, wouldn't take me much time... say... tomorrow! :biggrin:

(Yay, triple post -.-)

Just sharing a few thoughts I have right now -

Currently I'm saving screenshots cropped and resized down to either 170 or 150 px max width.

I'm considering writing a script that will scale and display full sized screenshots to at a requested size. The same function could then be used to create a screenshot gallery linked up to the database.

It could probably also type convert server side before sending the resulting image. Automatic smaller images? ^^

is a much more effective way of displaying the teleporters. If only the arrows where directional on that map...

What would be imo the best would be to do what's on that pic, connect the two points of the teleport with a line, only do it with a directed arrow, that only appears on mouse over, like the snapshot?

I'll consider working on a system where the exit point for the teleporter shows up on hover. It's not high priority though, I'm fond of the current extra info system and I'm coding exit and entry coords for teleporters in it at the moment.

The major problem with this, by the way, is unless I'm careful about it.. hmm

Take entry point at 20,30. Exit point at 55,90

The with a 15x15px image, the resulting box would span from 20,30 to 70,105. Even though it wouldn't have a background, so far as interacting with the map goes, you'd need to move your mouse OUT of that box before you could hover anything that would otherwise be underneath it. (Realistically this is more like 20,30 to 400,350 or something)

There are obvious ways around this, but I'm not going to do it, yet

Aww, thanks <3 But feel free to drop rocks if I start shooting at you.

(Generally if I'm being peaceful I'll take off my gauntlets, helm and possibly bow (if I run into too much trouble I'll need the bow to cast camo, so, leave it on :/), so I'm fairly unthreatening and easy to recognise. Oh yeah, I also run up to people, clap at them to get their attention and wave, then hope they realise who I am and don't kill me XD)

Well, that would involve javascript, and I don't know javascript.

If/When I get around to finishing the python backend, I will probably autogenerate info pages on things like forts and cities, including showing ALL screenshots in the collection (and the thumbnails here would link to fullsize images)

(I could probably write a python script to generate an animated gif, but that's a bit complicated and you'd lose the quality of the dynamically sized png)

Hey guys, I don't know how up to date these maps are anymore, or if anybody even still uses them, but I just thought I'd (very belatedly) explain my sudden absence.

I did not migrate with the daggers and abandon you poor folks to be mapless and lost.

I started a course at auckland university :)

Er, needless to say it's taking all my time, I have classes every weekday and a hell of a lot of assignments, plus you know.. sleep... Ah, yes, sleep, I remember you fondly. Anyway, I really have no time to code, or play regnum, or .. look at the forums.

Like my update in the first post says, I'm thinking of coming back in my winter & summer breaks and possibly working on the maps then too (I certainly need to tweak some of the images, I see the python scripts i've since implemented on my server are causing some problems)

I have, however, added phps symlinks for all the maps. So you're welcome to do whatever you like with them, and please PM me and I'll try to update the thread with anything based on the code. I DO check my emails, you see. :) Miss you all.

Hey if you have some time and feel like it, i think the map could have the locations of the element altars of the runestone quests.

Also the names of places are a little too tight together and it makes reading difficult. Making little dots indicating the name of the place when the mouse is over them would make it a lot more eye appealing I belive.

If I get my hands on a copy of fireworks soon I might tweak the graphics a bit and post them here. But sadly it`ll also have to wait. I`m currently way too busy with the university (in intervals, but still pretty busy :P). But itīs nice to do other stuff in my free time to exercise a bit more and it really clears my head :)

This is very nice good work. A suggestion tho is to find out Ignis/Alsius first/second/third cities and levels to be more helpful to Regnum beginners. :thumb:

IF I continue work on these, I will try and do something about the area names, and I was definitely intending to add a hell of a lot more information to the db-based maps. Save altars, markets, npcs, etc. I don't see why elemental altars couldn't be included in that.
I'm not likely to finish that anytime soon though, at the moment I'm a little busy with uni still. :P

(Edited two mentions of altars for clarity)

Been trying some stuff in flash, mainly filters and toggle buttons with rollover and made a little preview of my yet to be finished version of these maps:

(Looks nice on 1600x1200. Itīs supposed to be displayed in a blank page centered in a 1024x768 monitor but imageshack reduces the total size just because the height is higher than 1024 so just click "Change Flash Size: 1600x1200")

Still need to add pics of everything (that means redoing every movieclip, in my case) and make maps of all relams. I actually started on those and they are in the same swf but didnīt add any code that links to them :P. Iīm thinking of splitting every map into a different swf and vectorizing the overlay wich is basically still the same.

Filesize is not a problem. The preloader looks cool enough XD

Yet to be finished.
