Please could we have custom avatars enabled on the forum?

I actually like it the way it is now, if you have custom avatars soon people come with animated stuff and that gets my blood boiling.

I prefer the current avatar choices, because it is limited people are more prone to display an avatar related to their realm. And I just like to know which realm a poster is from :)

no it won't, cause I could chose the ignis logo if I wanted to, the easiest solution for this would be to get the information from the database and write it to the forum account.

I would prefer custom avatars too with a function which could decide if you wanted to view them or not

Like I said, people are more prone. Meaning more likely ;)

They could choose a neutral avatar or something related to an enemy realm obviously. I know some people who do. Also, we can already opt to not have other people's avatars displayed under the control panel.

I agree, most people use the basic three realm icons, and this is useful for seeing at a glance what realm they are from...

However it does somewhat detract from seeing who's who when there's a run of posts from the same realm. Having individual avatars would assist in making posts more personal at a glance.

I don't really care about all that of course, I'm just very vain.

I wouldn't mind much if people have custom avatars, but I goddamn hate sigs with images that take up much more space than their post's content. That's where I draw the line with vanity :D

Oh I agree, I hate dumb animated *SO* not funny icons to... I just wanted something more cute and personal. I appreciate there's no way to filter out people who want to have something really annoying...

You could probably also use imagemagick (maybe even ffmpeg if imagemagick doesn't work) to detect animated avatars and reject them, or just convert the gif to a jpg once it's uploaded.

The problem is moderation.

Without a proper, full-time moderator, some abuses could take place. Like uploading "diry pics".

I think that with the avatars available it's good for now. When NGD hires a moderator, then we can be allowed to customize our avatar image.

There are moderators, they just don't pay much attention unless you PM them. All you'd have to do is report it.
And the simplest way around this is to require a certain # of posts first before the feature is enabled.

Really, any problem you can find with it has already been solved by other forums you just have to look.


I agree, fortunately I'm not an easily offended type of person. I've just got used to the fact there's threads full of abusive, sexist, homophobic or otherwise hostile posts everywhere. For example, it's not particularly nice how to rape is now used as a gamerz term for a kill, given the reality of the word, so we just have to be tolerant of such things don't we. I don't see how an immature few abusing the facility to have pretty personalised avatars would be any different to that.

I'm sure it would be easier to moderate and act upon images than it is to currently moderate all the other inappropriate language based content that the forums are full of.
