Which lvl are you?
I use Shields on 11 or meanwhile 15 (whatever max) is possible for my blocking skills and 1 to 2 weaponsdiszplines. Mostly blunt (bc of lvl7 Str passive) and spears (more Str passive). I often use taunt too, its really nice bc you deal more damage on taunted mobs - lvl2 is enough.
Balestra is great for spearusers bc meleemobs cant reach you if you play smart, at lvl 15/19 ripost is the most usefull spell i think - its damage is more reliable then southcross for less mana at almost same amount.

I can give you 3 or 4 suggestions later today (at work atm), just need to know your lvl.
Ripost does'nt add much more dmg than Forcefull blow, imo it's better for barbarians.
If MoBs evade alot, try Provoking blow (third skill in Vanguard)

For training taunt(vanguard) is great, it really improves the damage you deal at a mob, also get some points into precise block, it works great. Try to get also caution to protect yourself.

LvL 14.. ok.. Use spears. And try to be walking back when u're fighting, so u can use the spear range. Use balestra, and then just attack at range. DONT use precise block. 10 seconds at lvl 1.. that is shit! Not even at lvl 5, DONT use it for training. Taunt is nice, u should use it too. And Cautel too. See what mobs are u used to train with and buy an armour very good/good agaisnt that damage, and then, use cautel. Dont use caution if the dmg resistance of your armour against the mob's dmg is very bad, bad or normal.

Caution is the english word :P
Anyway it's lvl 9 in tricks, so it's the fifth spell and you get it at lvl 17

I have a little question here too: How do you figure out what type of damage a mob does? Are there general rules like beasts do blunt, monsters do pierce?

yeah i was kinda wondering that also
I don't think so, but some are pretty obvious, like how cyclops warriors and ignean orc grunts do blunt and aquantis do piercing.
I'm also quite sure bears do blunt.
