This could be a joke, or you really don't know. I'll go for the don't know XD.
Sometimes the game looses the terrain, wich seems to "dissapear" before your eyes. The more you play and explore, the less this will happen.
Just relog and you'll see the ground under his feet.

This have happend to me too, some sort of bug maybe, I restarted the game and whoops problem solved

LOL That's classic! Sometimes images don't load properly, and relogging solves it. But other times, like last week after the update, all sorts of weird images happened! Half the NPCs in Gokstad were gone, just gone. Someone said they had fallen a floor below which meant, yep, they were all underwater. Just standing there.
What could a girl do? I hopped into the water to talk to Ferstel and get the second half of the earth rune quests. I jumped in, spun around, was half a second from clicking "accept" when I drowned, resurrected nearby, jumped in again, got the quest then drowned.
