The only downside with this screenshot is that the modifications to the Onyx-theme isn't visible. However, you can check out the Onyx-theme in this screenshot (http://offload2.icculus.org:9090/openbox/mw/images/4/4c/Ss_OnyxTheme.png) (not mine), and the difference is that all the orange is replaced by crimson to match the wallpaper.

Nice combo! I haven't even thought of it. That way I might replace my panel fully and only use tray+conky to keep track of things..

thx, I think it works perfectly for me. I hate panels and desktop icons and stupid information on my screen like time and weather. Or horrible pictures.

But don't forget, Ulmanyar, current Alltray is bugged. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/alltray/+bug/147751
so drag and drop in nautilus or evolution for e.x. doesn't work, if you start a program with "alltray nautilus" or "alltray evolution". But you still can copy/paste.

I hate desktop customization aside from functionality, so mines rather bland with just what I need.

I dual boot but have been in windows 7 alot recently, to see what it offers, and honestly I like it.

Theme is unchanged Aero, with a wallpaper I like,

Taskbar moved to the top because thats where it works best for me.
Added a dock I crammed full with the things I use daily so I don't have to type run or use my start>programs menu. I dislike icons on my desktop and prefer it to be uncluttered and clean. I don't like desktop addons (either in windows or linux as most are fluff..like weather...build, OS version..clocks..etc.

I would consider a network in/out meter, and a temp meter, and maybe ram usage/core utilization possibly as I like to keep an eye on those things, but otherwise I want to keep things simple as possible.

If you work for NBC maybe. xD

Ok, so I'm going to shamelessly plug the return to awesomeness a distro I found about a year ago. #! (Crunchbang) has switched (finally) from Ubuntu sources to Debian sources (Squeeze). It now comes in two flavours; the classic OpenBoxWM (what I use) and the XFCE Desktop environment. Here's a screenshot of the Openbox version.

Running (atm)
xchat2
Terminator w/moc and finch running
Iceweasel (Firefox branded for Debian)
Skype
Pino (twitter/identi.ca client)
And xcompmanager for the transparency (just for you guys, I don't really use it like this)
Using a grand total of 234mb of RAM. <3
The panel is called tint2 and is VERY light-weight and HIGHLY customizable with just a small config file.

http://crunchbanglinux.org/downloads/statler/alpha-01/

Hope you'll check it out :)

Back in the '99 time frame, I used Enlightenment as my window manager off and on. After having read an article in this month's Linux Journal, I was once again reminded of Enlightenment. I had messed around with E16, but was actually more interested in E17, which continues to be developed, albeit very slowly. Subsequently, I grabbed the latest snapshot via SVN, compiled, and got E17 up and running. The following is a screenshot depicting my mini project:

e17 isn't bad, but there are too many apps that aren't very good yet. I end up replacing most of it with gnome apps. By time I'm done I pretty much have a full gnome desktop installed anyways, so I always find myself switching back after a couple months.

It's because the Direct3D renderer is much better than the OpenGL one.
If you compare Linux OpenGL performance with Windows OpenGL performance, you'll see what I mean.

However, judging by this benchmark, Direct3D is not much faster than OpenGL: http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.com/2010/01/opengl-vs-directx-benchmark-comparison.html
Which means NGD's OpenGL renderer is still, for some reason, less optimal than their Direct3D one.

Project Neon is restarted after a while, and Kubuntu now has easy access to the latest KDE. I use it for testing mostly. Good thing is it doesnt mess up current KDE, but you choose on login screen session btw "project neon" and default (normal) kde.

this is more of a 'cluttered' workspace for me, just for the purposes of the screenshot. usually i have stuff spread over more different workspaces, it's just that i sent all open apps i had to 1:terms now.

anyway, if someone's interested - my dotfiles can be found here: https://github.com/vmaric/.files

edit: this is how it mostly looks like on my 1st workspace,
