New to game and wondering the best way to get experience

I have just started a week or so ago and my first character is Jorielo. I chose Conjurer because that kind of matches my personality as far as a support role. I love the game so far and am really enjoying playing.
I have gotten up to level 20 by mostly doing the Quests, but it seems to be harder to find them if at all. I figured out that this character type has no armor and to fight at a distance.
My question is what is an appropriate way to team up with someone to help out? It seems like when I have had the chance to play the others in the game at that time are all on a mission and doing their quests. The couple of times I have joined a party those characters were all at least in the upper 30's and I really couldn't help or seemed to get any XP - all the monsters (or whatever you call them) show as 'impossible' for me and I do no damage and I have limited healing at my current level.
Is it o.k. just to follow someone to try to get their attention? How can I tell if they are at a similar level so we can grind at things I can actually help with?

Its best to try and ask, in realm/clan chat mostly, if there are any players around your level who would like a support conju to grind with, often there are a few, support xp can be rather slow and un reliable in my experiance, but if you skill a ranged summon and set it to defend the person you are supporting you should get some Xp for every mob, so long as the summon deals decent damage, so this wont work as well on hard/very hard/Imp mobs, but is effective on Chall or lower.

If no group is available then Staff Mastery + Ranged summon is currently the fastest way for a conju to level, you could also use Mental + Summon if you find SM to boring, remember to use self heals and Ambitious Sacrifice, in the life/mana trees respectively, this spell combo will mean you very rarely need to rest.
