At this very point in time it's hard to say. We're assured that there's going to be some changes that will alter the possible answer by the time your character becomes effective in the warzone.
At the moment, by far the people who seem to enjoy the PvP side of the game most seem to be hunters (at least on Horus, where small groups are most common over large scale battles). I can vouch for trying to play a barbarian being rather uninspiring right now.
I'm inclined to say that everyone should try the melee experience first off though. It highlights the contrast in styles of play quite a lot.
As for Pros and Cons, I'll lay out the barbarian seeing as how that's what I have the most experience with (actually I don't even have an archer anymore...)
Pros :
- High damage. Very high damage. Exceedingly high damage.
- Very effective in groups.
- Most relevant target (in PvP) is almost always the closest one.
- Well appreciated roles in fort wars.
- Well balanced group crowd control effects.
- Decent ability to resist aforementioned effects.
- Excellent area damage
Cons:
- Highly like to have lost a lot of health before being able to do any damage.
- Mana hungry, but with a low reserve.
- A lot of guesswork involved in knowing where the enemy is/will be so that you can hit them. This is largely due to some technical issues with the positioning system, that we're assured are being fixed.

If you read the "Changes to the Combat System" Thread in the General Discussion forum.
It may influence your thoughts. I cannot advise on what class for you to take up mostly at the moment because i have no idea on how they will perform after the next update.

so as you may have realised now, picking a class in regnum is like a gamble, you pick a class and hope to god its not gona be the next target of the nerf machine...

I'd say pick knight they cant be nerfed anymore than what they already are but..
A. its not listed here
B. I dont wanna tempt the nerf machine
imo SM should be nerfed next time around so dont pick conj expecting to deal alot of damage for very much longer

In the current state of the game I would advise you to never ever think about barbarian. The class smells in war and in hunt (too fragile vs range, and too buggy to be played and enjoying it unless SM) .
For solo I would choose hunter, for war marks (they are weaker 1vs1), but more efficient in war IMO.

We have been saying that for ages, in the meantime Baleastra, Ribs Breaker, Thunder/Lightning Strike, Whirlwind, Onslaught, Dual Shot, and most likely some Ive forgot, have all been nerfed.

Looks like they have nerfed both range classes, so go for barbarian.
I'm having no problems with my hunter

Indeed, barbarian is probably one of the best beginner classes, they are quite easy to play, especially in a group.
The positioning lag, one of the only flaws with the class, is pretty much impossible to deal with, since its the major pitfall in ALL online games. For a warrior however, this is slightly better if you use a spear and you can also "lead" your movements by your ping time, so if you have a 300ms ping, you lead your movement by 3/10'ths of a second. It isn't as hard as it sounds, and you get used to it pretty quickly. I often play with 500ms ping and with a hammer, which doesn't have the range of a spear, its bearable.
