I've played World of Warcraft from 2004-2006, And also Warhammer and AoC and DAOC. I'm a big fan of pvp in those kind of games but they are all out of my interests now. I see that this game seems to fit the role of the kinds of games I enjoy, but I'm always worried about Item Shops in games like this.

I don't mind paying for a game, but is it an absolute MUST to use the cash shop to be effective in this game? Is it still a somewhat active game?

Of all the pvp games out there with item shop, this one probably has the least impact. All things being equal, gear makes a marginal difference. Teamwork, and skill (for some classes at least :p) is more important.

The population of the game is active and intense. The nature of the game creates strong bonds in clans and in realms.

The English server (Horus) is international though, so how active it is could vary by what time you play.

Hm. That sounds intriguing then. My client is at about 90% so I'll be trying it out soon. Any recommendation on where an Easter Canadian player should play to get optimal latency and community?

In EST timezone, you shouldn't have any problems (unless you play at 4am). Latency is good. The server is in Sweden I think, but I'm in B.C. and its been good for me.

Community-wise, go with the realm that's most appealing. The realms used to break out as Ignis: North American, Syrtis: European, Alsius: a mix; but I think they are more even now.

Which realm do you play for reference?

Which realm do you play for reference?

Alsius: the Northern Realm (being Canadian and liking snow ). Syrtis is green and elvish. Ignis red desert and evil. Other players could speak up on why they like their realms.

At the moment, Syrtis is the most populated realm, followed by Alsius then Ignis, though this fluctuates. Least populated realm gets a bonus to xp and gold (currently Ignis).

One of the big draws of this game is open world RvR (lack of which was one of Warhammer's big mistakes). This means sometimes you might get zerged by another realm with more players on, but it also leads to frequent "wow" moments.

I love RvR, but agree that Warhammer did a terrible job with it. The game sounds great to me, hopefully it's pros will outweigh the cons of most F2P games and I'll be able to get into it. Thanks for your help.

Haha that's good to hear. It's currently patching but I will probably end up trying Alsius.

Regnum also has unlimited free respecs (/reset_powers at trainer). This is unusual, if not unique, among f2p games (most charge $ for it).

Thanks for all your info guys, I got into the game and it seems pretty good. I'll show it to a few friends tomorrow when I have more time to play and hopefully I'll see you all in-game.

Hope you stay around for a while. The lower levels are extremely dull and boring, but you haven't seen the real game until you've fought in the wz at 40+.

Some useful information can be found at http://regnum.wikia.com

hi
ive been down that road which can only be describes as a "free to play, pay to win" mmorpg and fortunately this game doesnt have that problem. the premium items are mainly cosmetic and experience boosting. there are premium items which alow you to aquire a random epic or magical item but its nothing that cant be aquired without premium and many players sell the items they dont want or cant use.

welcome to alsius, give any of us a shout if you need help with anything online (expecially those pendant holders). and like the person above me mentioned, the game only really starts once you're active in the warzone

Yes, this is the main issue with RO, you have to get a high level to discover how RvR battles are great in this game (90% of characters at war are level 50, you can start in war zone at any level, but 30+ is recommended to have some fun).

Also note that NGD is about to modify the game (balance, gameplay).

Whatever, welcome.

Making a character to 30 its pretty easy, make all quests and will lead you to lvl 30 pretty fast 10hours maybe is enough.

30-50 lvl is the harder part, thats where boosters take place and the real revenue of NGD, but i dont think its real boring. All way from lvl 30 to lvl 50 is a way to know more about your char and also other chars in the game.

Knowing is probably the great skill at this game.

Hey there! Welcome to Alsius!
And don't worry, the goats are harmless (most of the time, that is)!

Agreed the goats are harmless unless you play in Syrtis or Ignis
