for some reason, I couldn't use my in-game name as my forum account, but anyways
Hello Regnum Online, I'm Ruscour and I just started playing. I'm a Dwarf Warrior (as I am in most fantasy games), and I can't wait to get into some RvR. I never played DAoC, but I did play WAR, and while that game had its (many) flaws, the concept of RvR was great, and it looks like that kind of combat could be a lot of fun here in Regnum.
It's great to be here, from what I've seen this game is pretty sweet, can't wait until it gets more complex, but I'm sure it will. Being a free game and not having crazy advantages for those who pay is so awesome.
In any case, I have a few nooby questions that maybe one of you guys can answer?
I'm from Australia, and while I don't expect a large Australian playerbase to be playing Regnum, at hours which aren't US/Euro primetime, is there still stuff happening? Is there still PvP going on? Because if there's not, that'd kinda blow.
And another thing, subclass choice. I'm probably going to play a Knight, because I typically play tanks in MMOs, I just have a little concern. Are they painfully slow to level, or is not that bad? From pictures I've seen, they look damn sexy. How bad is the gear grind to be able to compete in high-level RvR, and is the Knight more gear-dependent than other classes?
Anyways, Regnum seems like a good game and I'm having fun at the moment, looking forward to getting into some PvP action soonishly~!

What's with all the Vegemite eaters flooding this game recently? xD
Anyway, server action is usually low for your timezone. It's not dead, but for now it's not as active as the euro prime time. Although I keep seeing more and more aussies and NZ coming to the game. I can only blame kangaroos.
As for your knight questions: I don't play a knight and never leveld one, so here's what little I can share: They used to be terrible to grind to 50, but they just got a massive overhaul, things should be a lot better. This overhaul also greatly improved their RvR experience which is 100% what this game is about. I see a lot more knight in the field than I used to.
About gear grinding: I personally hate grinding. I've made almost no extra XP after hitting max level because of how much I hate it. So, I know nothing about gear grinding. But that's not the only way to gear yourself.
See, in the game 2 things create new items: Either drops or premium items called "lucky boxes". So, you can either grind your gear which WILL take a lot of time, or you can "box" it, which will take very little time but probably a considerable amount of cash. You can also trade, but I don't really know how things are in Alsius with trading. In Syrtis where I play, I got most of my gear from patience & trading.
Also, joining a good, experienced, old and larger clan will definitely help with that, as most of these clans have banks with gear that will definitely get you past the store-bought point once you hit lvl50. Oh yeah forgot to mention, I wouldn't worry about gear before 50, or at least 48-ish.

Thanks for the welcomes. Also, I absolutely LOVE Vegemite, it's so good. I eat it on potato chips and with raw carrot, and yes, people here think that's weird too. As for the whole kangaroo misconception, I live in a rural area, and at night you have to watch out for them when driving. But apart from that, Australia sees Kangaroos as much as everywhere else in the world does. Most people don't know they're nocturnal.
In any case, I've had a couple of people say that they saw my thread, which is cool :-) I'm actually having a lot of fun in this game, I'm definitely a MMO veteran, and Regnum is kinda basic AND has the typical "kill x things" quests, but for some reason, I'm having tons of fun. I blame the art style. Combat reminds me of Guild Wars (knockdowns, more combat conditions than something like WoW), and god I can't wait to be reminded of WAR's RvR.
Another question though (and thanks Miraculix for your answers, bro), how do you get high-level gear? Is it through RP, or is it all bought? And is it hard to PvP with shit gear? Thanks in advance!

Hello my fellow Australian! Alsius is for poof- nah, just kidding.
Gameplay picks up at around 10pm EST, best time to be on is about 2-4am, sad to say. During the day the US crowd is on, though, and you can have some fun then, too.
Evenings are a bit stale, it used to be a case of "log on, start drop grinding, hope that an incompetent hunter finds you," but there's generally a few minor skirmishes about. Might be a little more boring for you in Alsius seeing as how that seems to be your relatively strong time – meaning that Ignis and Syrtis won't put up much of a fight, but you should at least have some chatter to entertain you.
We're kinda fortunate, or not depending on how you look at it, as far as invasions go, because they tend to happen mid afternoon for us. Of course, if you can't get the afternoon off or play in your office.…
The gear grind is very variable. Some days you'll be flooded with drops, others you won't get enough to make armour repairs (assuming you don't grind "naked" – I'm told it's better for warriors to do so). Get a good clan and by the time you need to grind for gear you'll have a fair idea of what constitutes good gear and will know what to hold on to for trade as well as keeps.
Be warned that shields (knight only after level 10) are very rare drops indeed. You might not get a chance to trade for those ever, and if you do be prepared for a high price.
To answer your later question, RP does nothing at all except accumulate. High-level gear is almost always dropped from mobs and the "Epic" bosses (Alastor and Thorkul in your realm) – if you like spending money you might get lucky with a lucky box, but that's never helped me (The one good thing I got was useles for my class, and is currently held by a friend of mine). You will probably find that a fair amount of your gear ends up coming from trades with other players.
PvP with shit gear is possible, but often difficult. The most relevant factor in PvP to us Aussies is lag.…

Hello my fellow Australian! Alsius is for poof- nah, just kidding.
Hate to break it to you, but they're the only faction without Elves. There's a reason they call them Wood Elves...*cough*ghey*cough*

Yeah, there's always weekends. Should be right, I've got 6 weeks of school until I'm completely finished, and I work nights, so the pre-uni break should make for lots of fun RvR action.

That blows about shields, but eh. I'm hoping I can find a decent clan, not too sure, doesn't seem like there's any specific Aus-based clan going around. I dunno about in-game, but Regnum seems to be really lacking when it comes to an out-of-game community; the forums are quiet, the wiki is lacking and it has hardly any exposure. I blame the fact that English isn't the primary language, so the developers haven't focused on English exposure at all, which is sad. Dunno if I wanna continue playing, maybe, maybe not. Getting decent gear sounds like quite a hassle; I'm a big fan of (hate to quote WoW for doing something decent, their system is too accessible for terribads, so there's the compulsory WoW insult) emblem systems, to swap for gear, rather than hoping for luck, so that blows.

Do pubs get together and attempt these objectives, or are they pretty strict to clans? I've noticed some delay, so I'm probably sitting at about 350ms based on feel, which is disappointing. I trust that's still playable, though. If I was gonna spend money on this game, I wouldn't pay for a chance at gear. I'd pay for a perma-mount, though, I'll see about that :-)
Another question, though. I'm considering getting my girlfriend to play Regnum with me, games are always fun with more than one person. With two people, talking about max level when you're not running through a linear system of quests, could you do more stuff than you could when solo? Just wonderings.

You can see your exact ping by pressing Alt+P. Also, Alt+I brings up info about cpu and mem usage, fps, etc.

If you're on the east coast, you have a very accurate sense of feel. 350ms is about average for me, I think I broke though the 300ms barrier once or twice but never for long. As Mira said, Alt+P will give you server and gameplay ping.
The lag in itself isn't exactly debilitating though – it's simply something that you have to take into account. Once you've got used to the cooldown and cast timing indicators being a little out of sync with reality, it's not too bad working out when you can cast again, when you can start moving again, et cetera.
Epic bosses are, on the whole, performed by everyone who shows up. There have been occasions with the bosses in the warzone have even been defeated by teamwork between opposing factions. Only one person gets the goods, though.
I've never seen an Aus-based clan. I don't think there's enough Australian players.
I'm not sure I understand your question about doing more stuff with two than solo, but – Grinding, groups gain XP faster (The problem is often that you run out of stuff to kill). In PvP, the numbers generally win. Quests is a bit iffy. You can roll through the "kill stuff" quests faster with mutliple people, and there are some quests where you need a group (for example, each realm has a quest at level 49 to kill the dragon, which requires a very large group indeed), but equally there is no group objective or extra XP to be had for doing a quest in a group.

Welcome to the Game!
If you ever need anything you can /chat "Klutu" in game ill try to help ya anyway i can :)
Knights become a lot easier to grind since the big balance update I'm sure you will enjoy the Knight Class in war as many other knights are
Your Timezone is not to bad for war. If you wanna war I'm sure you could easily get a few people together and start some
Some tips
www.regnum.wikia.com -> Quest List / NPC Coordinates - Race/Realm/Class Info -- This stuff is really useful ^^
/Reset_powers <-- allows you to reset your characters points and rebuild your setup
Hope you enjoy the game! come to the Warzone when your lvl 30 ill give ya a tour :P

Alt+P tell me I'm sitting between 400 and 450ms...that's gonna hurt in PvP no doubt. I dunno whether I should continue playing or not, it's hard to imagine that RvR would be any good, the combat may be okay but I can't imagine anything but poor coordination, considering that pretty much everyone in Alsius chat is dumb as soup, I have to wonder if there's even level 50s out there.

If you're going by Realm chat, you probably won't find too many level 50s except when they come in from the warzone to rebuild.
In any case, my experience has been that good coordination only happens within clans and parties, or when sufficient persons know each other in the local area.
PvP only really gets unplayable when you start to average 600ms or more.

Now I've just gotta find a clan, then. It's very strange for non-forum-based recruitment to occur, guess it shows that this game is pretty much purely casual.
I think I'll be right with ping, though.

Never listen to realm chat just lowlvls kids & drunken blabber (shh:P) - if you want a active warring clan in Alsius - P.E.R.L (my clan) & Samsara are prolly the best to go Samsara I Believe is more European so it might be the wiser choice

You choose to be a knight, good for you ^^ This is the best class in the game in my opinion. If you like to shield your friends or go the opposite way and deal decent damage, the knight has great versatility and a great choice. Also we can be damn hard to kill if we skill for it :)
If you need help in game about knight stuff, ask me in game chat /Ultimate.

I did have a look at PERL, being the top Alsius clan and all. Are there any officers (don't think that's the Regnum term, oh well) I can talk to about joining? I know I'm a low level, just wanted to have a chat, I have a pretty rich competitive gaming history.
And yeah, I'm liking the Knight, pretty boring at the moment, but of course more depth is added once levels are gained, and there's some really nifty stuff there that I can imagine would be really good in RvR. Warhammer Online introduced me to tanks in PvP (which is unheard of amongst other games), and I love it, being able to stomp through the line and disable the enemy healer while simultaneously drawing enemy attention and buffing allies. The ability to stroll on into an enemy line and lead the way, and disable priority targets, is very much my style.
One thing that'll no doubt encourage my girlfriend to play this game is that it's the only MMO I've played where female Dwarves aren't ugly. I'm calling it right now, I'd say she'll play a marksman, or a barbarian. Probably a warlock if Dwarves could be mages (magi?). Any suggestion on a class (or subclass) that would be easier to play for someone who isn't as naturally good at video games as I am? Would a marksman or hunter be more difficult? I'm thinking a marksman would be more difficult while in combat, but a hunter would require better decision-making and situational awareness. But I have nothing to base that on.

Marksman is probably the easiest class.

well, theres Winged Wolf tavern which is a reasonably active clan, death, where im in, is reasonably active during US time, and we got another aussie :P, further i can just advise you to not go to the clans with like 200 members just inviting you without asking anything, in alsius this are mostly big clans with alot of low players that will never get higher, all thats left to say then is that you can also just ask in realm if there are any experienced players on, they might not be in realm chat, but ppl in realm chat can give you names you can pm.
You can also pm me, dutch wannabe tank/dutch twister killz/gendor the dwarf/dutch tornado killz, but i have no idea if you can consider me a vet xD

Hey Ruscour, how's it goin' :)
I get similar ping to you, ranges from 300-400ms which isn't SO bad i guess - I'm sure we'll be able to RvR even with it that high.
What lvl are you now?
& if you want a Clan, maybe you could ask Tiny Terror or whoever is in charge to come join Chaos? They're nice enough & seem pretty active.
Bye (Maybe I'll see you in-game)
