lochness42 has right, it all depends on the situation.
A Short bow i prefer when the enemies come close and while leveling, but a long bow is better for PvP to get in that first shot at the enemy.
Both Long and Short bows have their Upsides and Downsides and they are both good to use, it all depends on the situation.

Short bows are better for hunters, and Long for Marksman, but it's up to you ;)

Often hunters use short bows when they are hunting because short bows have better attack speed, basicaly you can fire of more attack than with a longbow.
Longbows on the other hand is better when you are taking over forts, a short bow just isn't good enough unless you are really really close to the enemy.

Master them both, you'll need both of them to scrath a barbarian's ass!
If you are leveling with friends use the long bow, u'll hit them first, do more damage and consequentially win more xp.
If you are leveling alone or with a conju by your side use a pet and a short bow, this way you won't miss "ambush" because you are out of range and you'll be closer to "punch" the targets.

hmm ive actually started using the long bow a bit more now =-0
shortbows skills just arent what i thought they would be lol
I use two longbows: one with range 25 and attack speed medium and one with range 30, attack speed slow and more damage. I think there are some good longbow-skills, shield-piersing, who does 175-210 dmg at lvl 2 and manouver whoīs add 10 dexterty for 120 sec.
If you use two longbows instead of a longbow and a shortbow havenīt you to share the trainingpoints.

Passive short-bow skills are applied when using long-bows, therefore "lightness" combo with "maneuver" gives u advantage over a pure longbow player; and shied-piercing AND dual-shot gives u advantage over shield-piecing (I'm not sure but i think u are able to do both of them before a slow bow 2nd shot, at least u are able to do it before a hammer strikes twice).
Sharing points between short and long bows is only a problem when u want to be able to do many things that u really don't need, for hunters is straightforward not to use tracking skills outside wz and pets inside so there isn't much of a problem (and passive skills rock).

I think Shortbow, well for Hunters and Longbow for Markmen.
My Experiment As a Hunter....
Took on Ghost of Slaughter with two bows short and long equiv to my level which is 33. In my experiment the pet used was a Savage Grypho
Short Bow w/Out a Pet
I killed him, but had 10hp left....YIKES!
Short Bow w/Pet
I killed him, had some life left (about 300hp) but not enough to take on two
Long Bow w/Out Pet
I killed him, had about 250hp left
Long Bow w/Pet
I can kill two in a row, rest for about 30 seconds and take on a third and not worry about dying
Results:
I use a long bow. When I get stuff I don't need I'll add it to short bows.
UPDATE:
I did one more thing, I reset my powers and added equal distributions to short bows and long bows. This is a great thing to do in my opinion. Now you become an adaptable fighter AND the passive slots all apply. So, depending on how you are fighting (on your own or in a group) you can select the weapon that best fits the need.
