Globe Icon and Overburdened

I have two questions:

There is a little globe thing at the top-right of the screen, attached to the compass. What exactly is that? When I click it, the globe becomes highlighted, but I don't notice anything happening.


And being overburdened. I can't see any negative effects of being overburdened at all, besides an annoying message telling me I'm overburdened every few seconds. Does it actually do anything?

It warns you that you should go sell, if you keep going on and gaining weight you will at some point stop and not be able to move at all.
So its kinda like a warning message so that you dont get more stuff so that u cant move.
