So I was checking out the thread Ichi made about what it would take for you to return to RO, and I was curious on what's keeping people playing. (Friends, trolling, gameplay, w/e) So yeah, what are the things that keep you playing this game?

Linux Compatibility. Its one of only 5 or 6 MMO's that run natively on linux. I dont count Runescape as its pay to play, and Java doesnt run too well in linux these days. Same goes for Ryzom, also a subscription based game.

So, I play this. Its all I can play on Linux, even though I dont enjoy it as much as I used to.

I log in like once a month just to remind myself why I don't play anymore.

So yeah, what are the things that keep you playing this game?

I was thinking about it many times, and there is only one answer: im stupid, but there are people playing that are even more stupid than me, so it keeps my self esteem high.

I'd say the community, but even that is falling apart bit by bit.

Honestly, my computer is the only thing that keeps me playing. As soon as I upgrade, you'll see another leaving thread.

Good question. I'd say these are the main reasons:
1) I'm running Linux, and there's no real Linux-native competition for RO
2) My PC is still sufficient for running RO/CoR, probably wouldn't be for most of the others
3) The community, and especially some very nice people that make the game enjoyable

1) I'm enjoying my 4 chars. Just discovered some interesting hunter combos vs locks and archers and enjoying experimenting. Barb is leveling nicely and I have some theories re good armor set up I want to try out. Knight is great fun to play despite low lvl.
2) Ha population is better than its been in quite a while, which is great fun. Ra is welcoming to non-Spanish speakers.
3) Some good ppl online including clannies.
4) Gameplay - CoR really is a one of a kind ATM
5) Linux compatible

And...

6) I'm looking forward to dragon update!
7) I want to get my hunter to WM

yup agree with this in particular.

for me, CoR is just a fun game to drop in and out and it isn't reliant on PvE or AI to have fun. the community makes the fun in a sandbox war.

Community.
Too many games have too many children (or childish people) playing them. I don't see much of that in my realm. People play as a team.
It is all about the community.

i feel community is important in a pvp mmo but i suspect there are factors in CoR which act to always create this really good community. By that i mean the game format and balance will always create a good community because :-

1) It's faction pvp. If you are not nice to your teammate, they will let u die during war.
2) It's pvp. If you cannot take dying and be responsible for your own improvement, then you will not feel comfortable. I think this makes players mature on their own.
3) There is reasonable balance in pvp. The constant ingame discussions of what it means to be balanced means players have to be mature enough to think logically and know now to whine when they die too much. This also makes players mature earlier.
4) Everyone in the realm fights. There is no place to hide. This compares to LoL where there are ranked matched teams. Because there is no place to hide, players have to be more accountable for their own actions, making for more maturity.

Factors such as the above, imho, mean that no matter where you drop CoR or even if u start with a brand new playerbase, a new strong community will form.

And i know some strongly disagree with this, but random allocation on login will also produce the same strong community because all of the above factors exist as well. Even more so, because you actually end up playing alongside both friends and enemies for certain periods.

eg: if u r not nice to ur teammate, the next time u r switched to another realm, they will kill u first.

you make some nice points.. but really stop pushing your random login theory
its not 'some' players who strongly disagree, its most players.
You think the points you mention actually help your random login stuff
but in fact it would turn out like LoL..
the game will attract more of those trolls and this community thrives on the abscence of them..

so really.. just stop wasting your time talking over and over about your random login
its very simple.. and many players on this forum have told you this..
it WONT work for CoR

We (still) play this game because of the friends we've made. The rvr is fun sure
and wanting to reach WM.. sure. Wanting to turn up in the rankings.. okay.
But than what? do the same fights over and over again?
invade to get the same wish over and over again?
that gets boring fast.. the only thing left are the players, it takes time to form those friendships
your random logins would ruin even that.
So please.. dont go giving NGD that weird idea >.<

Yeah, fotomay, with all due respect, please stop with that "random login" idea. It's just nonsense and we won't ever apply it.

Community, and the constant thought that when you log on you believe it'll be different and it always is. You have a good experience or a shit one, it's been shit lately.

The nostalgia is strong with this game, especially for me since it was my first game on the pc. I saw what the game was and what it could have been. I've seen a good company get lazy and lazy over time. I've seen people come and go(literally RIP).

I'm just a pissed off fan boy that still hopes this game will get better or NGD releases a new game on what Ro should have been.

thanks Adrian. i feel the idea still has sound logic but respect your wishes as game owner. sry if u saw the suggestion as disruptive. a great many players in game seem to be fairly consistently dissatisfied with the numbers imbalance.

You just made my day. + infinity.

I have retired. But, what has kept me playing so long and in the forums is definitely the community. At least in times past, this place has been like a family, a global village.
The level of maturity is (was) high.
So many professionals from varying walks of life
So many cultures, languages, so much depth to the community.
I learned so much about others, their culture, their way of life. Bonds that go past this game. Some people got relationships in this game.

You may leave the game but you can never truly disconnect from the community.

The game was just plain fun. You got immersed in it not so much by the game mechanics but by the people around you . I must admit that some of the crazy ways you died was really funny too.
The joy and thrill of battles you fought together, the ones you fought against and then, you get to have a laugh about it all on Christmas island. Contemplate running with a crew and knowing their builds, maybe make yours compatible to the crew's style, everyone working seamlessly, knowing what a colleague is going to do before they did it.
Now that is a game. That is what I miss most of all these days.

The community IS this game , it has always been. This is why I work myself up and come on the forums and caution , complain, brainstorm for so long.

This is why I watch Fotomay's idea with complete repulsion. It is not a terrible idea, it is just not for this game. I wish I could express to you in words fotomay, what a life blood the community is.

Players just want to make sure it stays and somehow keep what they have come to know over the years for both for themselves and their friends be it green, red or blue.

Such is a cult classic. Who has ever played this game for some time back in the day and could ever say they forget it?

Back to the original topic, the followings keep me playing:

1) Zina is sexy :D
2) fort wars are fun (the resist crap is not as annoying as in the case of an open-field pvp)
3) the community is more friendly than in most other games
4) native linux support
