Use a slow bow. When they increased the protection bonus awhile ago it made quite an impact on low damage weapons from what I saw. Imo, it's better to use a slower weapon with more damage now over a faster weapon with less damage. Less damage gets nullified on heavy weapons. On most of the new armors you will have resistances cut your attacks drastically, this is really noticeable on archers from my observations.
