Lore is very important in all rpgs, some people don't care about it while it is everything for others. Given this is a pvp game we can assume the average player cares more about the gameplay than story and roleplaying. So, with NGD as it is now I would prefer it left untouched. I mean, the lamai were a big wound to the already suffering story, we don't need more.
That aside, you can see from popular games, like WoW, The Elder Scrolls and many more, how well written lore can lift a game and improve its ambiance. I simply don't think we could expect such a thing from NGD right now. If I'm wrong I'd love to see some extended backstory to all the fighting.

+1 A well written story certainly makes a difference and distinguishes a good game from the boring average. However, with NGD struggling with the old code, bugs, and adding more content, the lore in RO gets a very very low priority. I've seen people suggesting ideas for background stories, and Piz's comic (though a fan fiction) is a perfect example. As you pointed out, Lamai were a mig mistake in terms of the game's setting and I'm affraid that it's not the last one...
