Explanation: How to tame a pet
I will try to translate my own thread from the Spanish forum. Since there is always someone asking this, I write it here. But if you see me in Alsius and you want to ask me in game, there is no problem.
In order to tame you need to fulfil four things: 1) The hunter must see the monster Normal or lower difficulty. This means that your character is same level or one level less than the monster. To be sure about this just select the monster without being in a party. If you are not the required level to tame you will see a text saying you do not have required level to capture this creature. 2) You have to use the right spell. In order to tame insects or small animals you have to use Tame lesser creatures. In order to tame beast like smilodons, wolves, bears, sabertooth, etc you have to use Tame Beasts. And to tame monsters like griphonites, orcs, trolls, aquantis, etc you have to use Control Monsters. To be sure about this, select the monster, then put the mouse cursor over the NAME in the box where the name, health and difficulty of the monster is shown. There you will see what kind of monster you are selecting. If you are not using the right spell to tame you will see a text saying you cannot capture this creature using this spell. 3) The spell must have the required level. Creatures level 10 or lower needs level 1 spell Creatures level 20 or lower needs level 2 spell Creatures level 30 or lower needs level 3 spell Creatures level 40 or lower needs level 4 spell Creatures level 50 or lower needs level 5 spell Is easy to remember if you write a zero next to the level of the spell. For example, using a level 3 spell you can tame creatures up to level 30. 4) ALWAYS, in order to be captured the creature must have less than half of its health. Some tips: -You attack the creature until it has a little less than half of its health. Then, you knock it down and move away (or you just move away). When the creature does not attack you any more, you get closer and use the spell to tame it (without attacking it again). This way the beast does not attack you during the 8 seconds of the casting time of the spell. -Always remember to stand neither very far nor too close, because sometimes the creature moves and leaves the range or it moves to your back before the 8 seconds, and you will lose the spell and have to wait the cool down time. -There are some kind of creatures that CANNOT BE TAMED. If you try to tame it you will see a text saying This creature cannot be tamed.

What is the first pet to be tamed? I have not yet found anything I could tame with level 10 and the first spell.

If you are in Alsius then no there is nothing to tame until you get to lvl 13.

There are indeed some red wasps in Vinland Forest, not sure what level they are. But entering Vinland Forest at level 10 is most likely suicide anyway due to the extreme density of aggressive mob there.
And regarding levels, it's not always clear what level the animal is. The colouring and classification is buggy at the moment. A "normal" mob can give CHG xp, i.e be of higher level than yourself and thus be untamable... I have another question on pets: What does the pet skill "performance" do? Does it work? I see an aura around the player when using it, and a progress bar, but as far as I can tell, using it has no effect at all on the pet's evade chance, or whatever it is supposed to do. |

So....I'm a hunter - and the ONLY spell I actually use (other than Runner) is to tame. Pretty much pets in the warzone are leveling buddies and cannon-fodder for fort wars. If you expect them to stay alive very long you are mistaken.
So, IMHO - just put skills into tame and use the rest for more important skills.

About the levels, you just kill one monster, if it does not give you +CHG points it can be tamed (it have to fulfil the other things). Performance works better on some pets (if it works at all). I don't use it because I rather put my points on Training or Skin of the Beast. Performance is supposed to improve Evasion, but remember this will depend on the basic evasion rate of the creature. For example, creature with 10 of evasion rate and level 5 spell, is 25 of evasion. Not that much, an Archer level 38 has about 50-55. But if the creature has 30 of evasion rate, level 5 spell will make it 75. Unfortunately there is no way to know the numbers of the attributes of the pet. So you will have to test Performance, and decide if it works right or not.
