You can try ubuntu, it's been a real hit among those new to linux, there is no 'better' distro for regnum, because all distros have basically the same software, what really separates the distros are mainly the installer, the location of start scripts, and most importantly the package manager, there are many different distros tailored to the different needs and individual preferences of users, personally I use Debian (which ubuntu is based on).
There are many distros available though, but they are not different in the aspect that a program will work in one and not the other* because they all use the same kernel, libs and underlying GNU programs. *This is not strictly speaking true because there are occasions where certain distros modify libs to the extent that they end up incompatible with some software, however this is fairly convoluted and you aren't likely to encounter this problem.

I am running Regnum with Ubuntu myself, and it works fine. But I have read a lot of threads about people who have problems with Hardy (and Gutsy), but I'm not sure if it's related to the market shares of Ubuntu, the lack of troubleshooting-knowledge among Ubuntu-users or if Ubuntu actually are a bit troublesome.
Otherwise I suppose Debian would work great. Not as newbie-friendly as Ubuntu (which is based on Debian), but really a great distro. EDIT: Perhaps I should have read Frostes answer more carefully before writing another answer that's acutally saying the same thing.. sorry |

I have used many distros.
From GoboLinux, Arch Linux and Slackware, to Pardus, Kubuntu and openSuSE. Always working great. Only things that may differ is the number of packages required to install in order to make Regnum work. In openSuSE Regnum mostly worked out of the box for me, while in Fedora for example I had to install some packages and create a number of symlinks.
