Game crashes when turning sound on

When I log in the game and want to turn the sound on, the game crashes (crash log shows something about missing sound resources, I can bring the log after work).
It can be enabled only when i toggle autorun and turn sound volume up very slowly. After some few crashes (usually 1-2 but yesterday it was 7!!) i can hear the desired sound of steps.
it doesn't depend on enabling sound in game options before logging in.
I'm playing on Ubuntu 8.04 (had the same problem with 7.10) and the game runs without any other crashes (maybe one crash a week or two).
