okay but do I need to configure and make an install?
I can't find it in Synaptic or is there a deb file somewhere? I am using Ubuntu 8.10 |

sudo apt-get install openal I am not using Ubuntu so I cannot check it myself. It's strange that you can't find it in Synaptic, it's a rather essential lib and I am sure it must be included in the repos. Try to refresh your repos using Synaptic and then search again.

I found libopenal1 in synaptic and installed it and now I have sound!
