okay but do I need to configure and make an install?
I can't find it in Synaptic or is there a deb file somewhere?
I am using Ubuntu 8.10

Code:
sudo apt-get install openal
That should work, I guess.
I am not using Ubuntu so I cannot check it myself.

It's strange that you can't find it in Synaptic, it's a rather essential lib and I am sure it must be included in the repos.
Try to refresh your repos using Synaptic and then search again.
