It's not as simple as that. Having different numbers of chromosomes doesn't in itself stop different species from mating. Goats can mate with sheep even though sheep only have 27 pairs of chromosomes.

It's the same with lions and tigers, horses, donkeys and zebras, and many others. Though the hybrid offspring is usually sterile.
