Actually, power wise it's better for the horse to push, as it can use its (insanely more powerful) back legs more. This is why your heavy carriage harnesses are solid up to the brace, which isn't as effective as putting the horse behind the carriage still.
As it happens, the problem with putting Descartes before de horse is actually that horses generally panic when they can't see where they're going.
