Yes it would.

If you are working hard to get your customers to renew their account every month, you would pay attention to their complaints. But in their current model, it just works for them to make the player cough up 60$ once and thats it. The customer is expendable, get a new customer promising free to play, make them believe that buying premium would somehow improve their game play and save the hours they invested in this game, rinse and repeat.
And some players are dumb enough to fall for this again and again.

But although I must admit it is a clever strategy Its working with me !
