ATI Video card problem

I'm running Kubuntu 7.04, using a ATI Radeon fglrx video card (there's no number in the video card's name, is this card supported?)

The rolauncher pops up with the message:

Unsupported video card!

There are three possible causes for this error:
1. Your video card is too old
2. You haven't installed the latest available drivers
3. You haven't installed the latest DirectX version

So, I looked around the forums, got Envy and installed the ATI driver, restarted, still got the same message, looked around some more, and entered the command:

glxinfo | grep -i direct

The reply was:

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

In klixon's reply in another thread, he stated that the "direct rendering: No" was the problem. I'm guessing this is the problem for me, along with the fact that my video card might not be supported. Any suggestions?

Also, isn't Wine the Linux version of DirectX?

You did not install the driver correctly.
Try to load the module dri or drm (i don't know which one... don't use ati anymore )

A view on your xorg.conf would be very very nice, too.
What version of fglrx did you install?

fglrxinfo |grep version

should tell you.

To the wine thing.... Mhm yes and no. With wine you are able to use directx but there is a native OpenGL version of Regnum which should be more stable and has a better performance in Linux

Well, thanks anyway.

I launched Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and it didn't work. It used to be just fine, with great speed and graphics. Now, it won't load.

And so, I tried uninstalling all of the Envy drivers and restarted my computer, but now there's nothing but a black screen and a blinking _ in the upper-left hand corner after it loads. Recovery mode works fine, but I guess there's something messed up with my video card. Teaches me to mess around with stuff I don't know well.

I'm not really concerned anyways, didn't have much important information on this computer, and I don't really like Kubuntu. Not as many people use it as Ubuntu, which makes finding support a bit harder.

Also, do the installed drivers only affect one partition on my hard drive? Or does it affect the whole computer? Just wondering.

How do you look at the xorg.conf file? And where is it located?

sharpe95, type sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf in a terminal, then you get info in your xorg.conf file..

Yes there is something messed up but don't worry.
When you see the blinking _ press "strg+alt+f1" and log into the console. Then type

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Search the Section Device where you entered "fglrx" as video driver. Replace it by "vesa". At the next restart you should be able to use the graphical interface again.

Well... Ubuntu and Kubuntu is quite the same. Kubuntu uses KDE desktop and Ubuntu uses Gnome. The difference are the programs names and the outward appereance.
Kubuntu also needs other libraries for the desktop.

Well. Do you have two partitions of Ubuntu? So there are more system installations? If you have 2 systems installed you have to install the driver on both. If the other partitions are only music or games you only need to install it once

Uhh, well, thanks for all your help, but I just deleted my partitions and got a Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 OS.

I downloaded a proprietary driver using the Restricted Drivers manager, it's called the ATI accelerated graphics driver. Now, direct rendering is enabled.

The description of the driver was:

This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of ATI graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards.

The only problem now, is that the rolauncher won't even execute. Double-click doesn't work anymore. I'm not sure how to use terminal to execute it. Do you just do "./rolauncher" ?

And just ask if you still need to see my xorg.conf.

Problem resolved. I can play Regnum with no problems now.

Woot? They simply threw fglrx away?
Or is it just renamed?
