Default Banned Books

http://sshl.ucsd.edu/banned/books.html

Just a list of books that were challenged in different places around the world.
I'm sure many of you have read some of these and love/hate your personal
picks. I hope you'll reply with your favorites, even if they arent on the banned list;might be worth a look for us who havent read them.

My favs were
of Mice and Men

les Miserables

Grapes of Wrath (not on the list)

lots of others I liked but these stand out as particularly memorable to me.

I encourage the readers in the forum community to pick one you havent
read yet and enjoy.

Alice in Wonderland:

Banned by the Chinese Governor of Hunan Province on the ground that "Animals should not use human language, and that it was disastrous to put animals and human beings on the same level."

Fahrenheit 451:

Expurgated at the Venado Middle School in Irvine, Calif.. Students received copies of the book with scores of words -- mostly "hells" and "damns" -- blacked out. The novel is about book-burning and censorship. After receiving complaints from parents and being contacted by reporters, school officials said the censored copies would no longer be used.

O_o epic book, softcore pussies.

I can't believe some of the shit they banned, Huckleberry Finn? The Catcher in the Rye? Of Mice and Men? And what kind of American bans a Hemingway book?

1984
Because Orwell's novel is "pro-communist and contained explicit sexual matter.

pro-communist? lulz

And Brave New World? Banned, so the kids can't see that it's real today!

I am VERY surprised though that Lord of the Flies wasn't banned anywhere. I remember reading it when I was 10 and it had HUGE impact on me. I remember it to this day even if I've read it back then oO
Even reading One Hundred Years of Solitude didn't thrill me like that book did ;P

The Culture books by Iain M. Banks are epic.

Why the hell is To kill a mocking bird there. That is a brilliant book imo loving how most of it is Texas, Alabama and Illinois challenging these books XD

Brave New World -- Aldous Huxley (really enjoyed this one)
Of Mice and Men -- John Steinbeck (I'm astonished this one as been challenged)
Les Miserables -- Victor Hugo (Amazing books)
1984 -- George Orwell

Further evidence of the absurd backward thinking some people display in the US...

I was really surprised to see a Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic and Nickel and Dimed in the list.
