Default Game crashes when starting

Good morning everybody, i installed Regnum Online on Ubuntu Karmic.

My hardware:

P4 3600
Radeon 9600 configured with driver non-proprietary (Xorg.conf = driver : "ati")
Audio onboard

So: i can start the game, i can choose my realm and then create a character. But after that, i try to go on and click play: the game starts loading "resources", and then, always, crash down, at 80% or even 100% of the process. It exits, and i find myself back on my desktop with resolution down to 1024x768.

Any idea of the possible issue here? Any workaround? Notice that i used, successfully, the guide here for configuring the open ati drivers.

Thanks in advance,
Tc.

Can you post your crash_backtrace_(pid).log? Or is it not generating one?

Have you tried running the game in "safe mode"?

Unfortunately the radeon drivers used in karmic may not be quite up to scratch. I'm fairly certain most of the guide that's posted is outdated - the only bits you should need at this point are the driconf steps.

Try with a lower resolution Tcalda.

Default It could be video size

Try windowed mode first if your able to go in.. Try a display size of your desktop..
If it work then try a different screen size you may not have proper mode lines or display size that your x server is uses to which causes a segment fault...

I believe xrandr takes care of the configuration now instead of mode lines..

my girlfrien is having the same problem!

She is not using safe mode, but, it`s set all to the minimum..
so, she enters the game, choose the char and then it starts loading...It loads her char into the game and 1 second after that the game crash

In log, I think that`s something with DRI

On Jaunty, she could play using some work arrounds and having to install driconf to set stc3 (don`t remember exactly what was the name), but since Karmic, she can`t anymore
She owns a Ati X1400

Default Mesa driver problem, probably.

This is probably not NGD's issue.

There seems to be an issue in the version of the Mesa3D radeon driver shipped with Karmic (and a couple of versions before, and every version since, ...) that means that one of the calls back from libtxc-dxtn segfaults in the driver.

I know where it's crashing and have a fair idea what the function's supposed to do (it's related to memory offsets), but am having difficulty chasing down the cause of the problem. I can tell you it crashes for r600 too, where texture uploading isn't even impelmented yet.

That said, those crash_backtrace_*.log would be really handy in saying more about what's happening. They ride in the live/ folder of your regnum installation (normally ‘~/regnum/live’)

A possible work around is to "Enable S3TC texture compression even if software support is not available" in driconf and remove libtxc-dxtn:
Code:
apt-get remove libtxc-dxtn0
This may result in texturing artefacts, or may not help at all as NG3D uses pre-compressed textures that are pushed straight through the driver to the GPU for decompression.
