It all depends on your keyboard layout.
Personally I press AltGr + ^ + n, with Swedish qwerty layout.

I'm using an American English keyboard...
What is AltGr? I've tried using alt combinations to achieve accented letters but I have not had any luck. |

Anyway, for some characters on an American keyboard (using the numerical keys next to the arrows - or, like in my case, if you're on a notebook, Fn + Alt + colored numerical keys): ñ = ALT + 164 á = ALT + 160 é = ALT + 130 í = ALT + 161 ó = ALT + 162 ú = ALT + 163 There are many websites which have all the needed codes for this. These are the ones I mostly use.

That is because ALT seems to be ignored in the chat box. (Sorry, I assumed it worked.)

Well, it's not the same if you have a keyboard with "dead keys" that allow you to form these special characters. [ Edit: with this I mean, keyboards like the Spanish keyboard, that allow you to type the tilde + vowel to form the special character. ]
I think the issue is the ALT key being ignored in the chat box, not the characters themselves. If you're on Windows, you could create a custom keyboard layout that you can use for RO, in the meantime. Look up "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator", which generates an installer for your custom keyboard layout that you can later change back and forth, in Control Panel > Regional Settings.

If you're on Linux (as your name suggests) check this: http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/xmodmap.1.html

I have experimented a bit with this issue just now, and get some strange results.
Non-deadkeys (in my Swedish/Linux layout) 'å', 'ä' and 'ö' are not accepted. That is, I can type it in the name input field, but the name is rejected as 'invalid.' Same goes for the same non-deadkeys in the Windows client. Names containing any of the letters åäö are rejected. Using a Spanish keyboard layout (Linux/Gnome) yields that although I can log in to the account, I cannot type anything at all in the character name input field. But if I press the 'P' key, I get the ping info popup as if the Alt key were glued down in the Spanish layout. It seems however, that gnome uses some other method than altering the xmodmap table. (xmodmap -pke still says odiaeresis for the unmodified 'ö' key when using Spanish layout in an xterm) My best guess is that the RO client doesn't use the normal input methods in X11. Keyboard input implementation in MS Windows isn't as sophisticated as it is in X11, so application programmers are used to have to do things 'by hand' in Windows. This handwork method were then probably inherited from the Windows implementation when the client was ported to Linux. A problem with accepting names with 'odd' letters is of course that it makes it troublesome to /party, /buddy, /chat or /ignore players using such letters. But then, that goes for names with 'ñ' too, for non-Spanish keyboard layout users...
