RO isn't initializing when desktop icon is opened!

Title says it all. There is no obvious activity when attempting the shortcut or from the system menu. So here is my details of my hardware in short.

duo core intel t5500
ati mobility m56 x1600
2gb ddr2 533mhz
intel wired/wireless network
ubuntu 10.04lts 64bit

added note
the propriety driver for the ati graphics isn't loaded because it can not be activated from the hardware selector so it is the default xorg driver that comes with this distribution as mentioned.

ok i discovered a more modern linuxOS distribution that alleviates this frustration.

it is: OpenSUSE 11.4 that has an official support beyond its original LTS.
