View Full Version : [Tipp] Move Buff/Debuff icon location

Some of you mightve discovered that already but i thought id share:
Since the new UI especially on bigger resolutions the new Icon location on screen is more then annoying since Healt/Mana and Icons are on opposing sides of the screen. Additionally broken items might overlap with the BuffDebuff Icons.
I noticed a small trick that allows to "move" those icons horizontally into the middle of the screen, next to the target Health bar.
Howto:
1. Change your display resolution in the game.cfg located in the regnum main directory. ( Linux that would be ../regnum/game.cfg | windows that would be ..\Regnum Online\game.cfg ) to a horizontal value of 730 (Smaller value will move it more to the left, bigger more to the right side) and save it.
vg_screen_width = 730
vg_screen_height = 600 (This one doesnt matter for the icon position)
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3898/1ststepi.jpg
2. Log into the launcher. Make sure to start the game in windowed mode (Take the check out of "Full screen", even when you change it to fullscreen later). This you do in the launcher options menu. You should also see the modified display resolution from the game.cfg there.http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5781/step2ogoptions.jpg
3. Log fully in, so youre in the world with your desired character, go into the Video options and change the display resolution to your desired one.Notice: If you have a pet active, dismiss it before changing the resolution!
There is a bug which renders the pet bar unresponsive when resizing the window. (Thanks to Skity for spotting this!)http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/8936/choseres.jpg
4. You should now see the buffs positioned near the target bar, in your desired resolution. Here its 1920x1080:http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/2698/windowedn.jpg
5. If you want to you can now hit [Alt]+[Enter] to get into Fullscreen. And in case you dismissed your pet before, reviving it now will give you a working pet bar.http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/4510/screenshot2012011122361.jpg
(Step 1 and 2 should only be needed setting it up for the first time.)
Enjoy!

I noticed a small trick that allows to "move" those icons horizontally into the middle of the screen, next to the target Health bar.
Howto:
1. Change your display resolution in the game.cfg to a horizontal value of 730-750 and save it.
Im using:vg_screen_height = 900
vg_screen_width = 750 (Smaller value will move it closer to the left, where the hp bar sits. 730 seems a sweet spot.)
2. Login with these values.
3. Change the display resolution in the ingame options to your normal one.
The Icon's absolute position seems to be calculated relative to the horizintal resolution at startup of the engine, but isnt changed afterwards, aswell as the UI items dont scale their size, thus the Icons should appear next to the Target on any resolution higher then the one chose in the game.cfg.
With vg_screen_width = 750 on login and ingame resize to 1600x900 it looks like this:
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/2360/screenshot2012011117412.jpg
Here 750x900 before changing resolution ingame:
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/7199/screenshot2012011118071.jpg
Now ingame changed to on 1920x1080 and made fullscreen:
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/1862/screenshot2012011117562.jpg
This was only tested on the linux client. Let me know if it works on Windows too! Edit: Thanks Heal, seems to work.
Enjoy!
This is just awesome.
I'll make sure to test it out at home to make sure it doesn't affect negatively while on live gameplay.
If it doesn't it would be great to actually set this thread as a sticky, and make a spanish version of it, offering the users the chance to customize their active spells icons positions as they please.

In my opinion prefer them under the Name and Hp/Mana values. But I think it's still cool

Well its a rather dirty workaround that just works due to a minor bug in the new UI: Not recalculating intended Icon location on resolution change. With that bug if you login on 1600x900 and switch to 800x600 the icons will stay off window.
The best solution would be to have a separate option of this either in an XML file that can be edited by users (could allow other user customizations at in the future) or some option in the game.cfg (i.e.: vg_buff_pos_x, vg_buff_pos_y).
But yes, we all know somethings to hit live can take a while and until then this can make life way easier, regarding RO at least^^
Edit: Oh and please, please, dont fix that bug before adding an option to move the Icons.. xD Thanks.

Yes, however with the new feature that shows party members on screen the 2nd row of Icons would collide with the first member shown.
So either have it halfway under the target bar, or like on this workaround shown next to it. Imo Its more clean on the edges of the screen but sure, a full customization ability would suit the best to fulfil evryones needs.

Right forgot about that. I removed them by hiding them at options and forgot how it affects it:D

Only problem I figured out is changing chars is moving buffs back to the right, so you would have to log out completly to change chars with buffs left sided.

I updated the OP since there is an issue when you have a pet bar active when changing resolution. (Thx Skity :))

Right, since you can't get a custom resolution into the ingame dropdown list there seems no way to get down to 730x600 before changing chars. On the other hand, due to the timer "change character" takes longer for me then clicking x and logging in fresh ..

we're forcing a "resolution bug" to have again on the left the icons you moved on the right because:
buffs on the right are used by many other games out there, we couldnt find a better solution (design wise) maybe we can improve this in a later update
and now you want to stick a thread that explain how to force the game to revert what you changed?
i really don't understand:facepalm3:

I just need step 3, the resizing part in ingame options.
Nice find, Enio.
Of course, as for the "fix for keybindings annoyance (http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=47793)", it would be much better if NGD addressed this issue., by adding a way to place UI elements where we want (and save the position/size).
While i like the new UI look, and the extended spellbar, i think much more work is needed to make it more user friendly. As it is for now, it looks like more like a skin over the old UI (with some regressions, to be fixed soon i hope), than really new UI.
I was waiting:
- fully bind-able actions
- movable/re-sizable elements
- user-defined spell bar size (width and height in number of items)
- resolution-dependent elements (ie. spell bar buttons have same size in 800x600 and 2048x1600, which is wrong imho)
- consistent save/restore of dialog properties (ie. i have to resize chat dialog each time i log, i have to move again spell book when i press TAB twice, etc...)
- a much more efficient HUD, with important information
- a notification system for party/chat/clan requests
- lockable icons in spell bar
Once again i like the new UI (after last hot fix and regarding upcoming fixes), but i hope NGD will not stop here.
And in this sense i am worried the community is forced to find tricks to solve obvious usability issues.
It could be interesting to have NGD's official statement about UI future.

This was very helpful, thanks.
I just hope NGD would just put the placement of buffs/debuffs in that position permanently just consistent with the old GUI.

Nice, helps for a player that isn't so "active, like me, to be able to keep up to date and tweak the game more to my liking.
On a more personal note, You are welcome! Things like this are why dedicated players are so appreciated.

You might have to modify/use older version of game files which would made this modification not covered by the Terms of Service.

There is an option somwhere in game.cfg that defines the size of the portrait, setting it to 0 makes an invisibly small portrait (=you don't see it) - however there is no increase of performance /fps from that ;)
To get the buff icons into that position I guess that you have to start with a very small screen resolution and also reduced height ...

Nope, changing buff position vertically doesnt work with resizing window.
However i wouldnt want that shown position anyway as itd collide with the pet bar and the topmost party member bar.

Since yesterdays update the combat log hangs halfway between chat and portrait. Thats why i had to switch it off/on for repositioning, which is another additional step to play with nearly old layout.
Concluding this work around gets worse, but still no better solution from developer side
